About Us

In 1948, a group of 28 professionals, in Berea, Ohio, dedicated to the advancement of the personnel profession formed the American Society for  Personnel Administration (ASPA), now known as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). As ASPA became more nationally recognized they relocated its headquarters to Alexandria, VA where it currently maintains a close and watchful influence on legislative issues that come from Washington. SHRM prides itself on being the leading voice of the human resource profession and represents the interests of more than 160,000 professional members around the world.

Locally, in 1989, under the direction of chapter president, Tom Toaddy, the chapter renamed themselves to The Greater Lake County Chapter of SHRM. In 1999, the growth of the chapter was now including Geauga county hence the chapter again renamed themselves more accordingly to the Lake/Geauga Area Chapter of SHRM.

The Lake/Geauga Area Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, as well as SHRM, has the following primary goals:

*  Be the primary influencer of workplace policies and practices that benefit our members and the organizations they serve;

*  Build a broad and actively engaged membership that ensures dissemination of leading practices to the workplace;

*  Be the major source for building strong competence and developing the talent and leadership of people in our organizations;

*  Ensure a solid financial structure that permits reinvestment in initiatives and learning that advances the state of the profession.

(LGASHRM is a 501(c)6 Professional Association as defined by the IRS)
